British Fire and Rescue workers try to clear surface water left by flash flooding on the A689 near Bishop Auckland in northeast England on September 25, 2012. Heavy wind and rain have battered central and northern parts of the UK with more rain forecast. Swathes of northern England were struggling to hold back flood waters after a historic market town was swamped following a second day of torrential rain. People were evacuated from their homes in Morpeth, Northumberland, in northeast England before the River Wansbeck overwhelmed flood defences and the waters swept large tree trunks down the river.
