A 48-year-old man was charged for shooting a 7-year-old girl in the head as she played on a community playground. Elvis Smith, of the 4000 block of Kennerly, was charged with 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, 2 counts of Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. The shooting happened in the 1400 block of Castle Lane in south St. Louis city. Officials said two men were arguing near a playground in the Peabody housing complex when Smith allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting. Janayla Douglas, 7, was struck in the head. Residents said at least 15 children were on the playground when the shots rang out. Police say the young victim is listed in critical condition at an area hospital. The intended target of the gunman has been found. Police are questioning him. Smith was arrested in the 5000 block of Wells. Bond was set at $250,000 cash only.
