JOHN LENNON: "GOD HELP BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN"

NEW YORK (AP) -- John Lennon said just three days before he died he wasn't "afraid of being afraid," but he did feel bad for Bruce Springsteen. Lennon told Rolling Stone in what's believed to be his last print interview that critics create illusions of idol worship and they want "dead heroes, like Sid Vicious and James Dean." Lennon said he wasn't interested in being that. In 1980, Springsteen was rock's future, and Lennon said, "God help Bruce Springsteen when they decide he's no longer God....They'll turn on him, and I hope he survives it." Lennon also said he had "plenty of time" to accomplish his goals. Rolling Stone had published a story based on the interview in 1980, but this is the first time the full interview will be published.
