ARETHA FRANKLIN: JESSE JACKSON DESCRIBES SINGER AS "RECOVERING VERY WELL"

DETROIT (AP) -- We still don't know what is ailing Aretha Franklin. But a longtime friend describes her surgery last week as being "serious." Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson says he has spent some time with Franklin recently -- including as recently as a few days ago. He describes Franklin's spirits as being high and her faith strong. Neither Franklin nor her publicists have said what is wrong with the singer. Jackson wouldn't disclose what, if anything, he knew about her condition, other than to say she is responding well to the surgery. Another longtime friend, Smokey Robinson, said much the same thing to The Associated Press on Sunday in Washington. Franklin announced last week she had undergone a surgical procedure. Last month, she announced she was canceling all concert dates and personal appearances through May -- on doctor's orders.
