(KMOV.com) -- An elderly man and his sister were killed when an EF4 tornado hit their home in the rural southern Illinois community of New Minden, said coroner Mark Styninger.
Authorities in Washington County, Illinois, said three other people suffered minor injuries due to the weather.
A third person died in Washington, while three others perished in Massac County in the far southern part of the state, said Patti Thompson of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. She did not provide details.
A survey team with the National Weather Service assessed damage in the area and categorized the tornado in New Minden as an EF4. NWS estimated winds in the tornado reached 166 mph and was at least 3 miles wide.
The Red Cross responded to the area to help any displaced families.
