(KMOV.com) -- Illinois Republican Congressman John Shimkus easily won re-election to a 9th term with 69 percent of the vote.
His Democratic opponent, retired nurse Angela Michael, received 39 percent of the vote. It was her first political campaign and she admitted to News 4 that she ran in order to use the campaign as a platform to communicate a pro-life message.
Shimkus will go to Washington, serving the newly drawn 15th Congressional district which stretches from Madison County to Indiana and from Champaign to Kentucky.
The district was redrawn after the 2010 census.
