INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A new state senator has been sworn in to fill the seat vacated by Indiana's new secretary of state.

Republican Peter Miller of Avon was sworn in by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Robert Rucker in the Senate chamber on Tuesday afternoon. Party activists picked him earlier this month to complete the term on Secretary of State Connie Lawson.

The 42-year-old Miller is the 4th District GOP chairman and formerly worked with the Indiana Office of Management and Budget.

Republicans in the district west of Indianapolis still need to pick a candidate to replace Lawson on the general election ballot.

Gov. Mitch Daniels selected Lawson to fill out the term of former Secretary of State Charlie White after he was convicted of vote fraud and other criminal charges.
