CHICAGO (AP) — Sen. John Kerry says Democratic Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias (jeh-NOO'-lee-us) has demonstrated dedication to green issues and clean energy.

The Massachusetts Democrat was in Chicago on Tuesday to campaign for Giannoulias, who faces Republican Congressman Mark Kirk in the close race for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

Kerry says Giannoulias promoted green record keeping during his time as the state's treasurer and has proposed a sound energy agenda.

The 2004 presidential candidate is the latest high profile Democrat to stump for Illinois candidates. So far, the president, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have visited the state.

Last weekend, Sen. John McCain attended a fundraiser for Kirk.
