Retired firefighter becomes ice climber

MONTEBELLO, Va. (AP) -- The colder the better for Lane Terrell. He's a retired Lynchburg, Va. firefighter and an avid ice climber. He's climbed in places like Colorado's Estes Park and New Hampshire's Mount Washington. He doesn't often get a chance close to home. But the cold snap that has gripped much of the country has made Crabtree Falls in Virginia a solid sheet. Ice climbers are few in the area, so Terrell climbs alone. But he tells the Roanoke Times that he loves the solitude.
