WHEATON, Ill. (AP) -- A man accused of beating his sleeping father to death with a weed trimmer has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Woodridge police went to the home of 47-year-old Sanjiv Desai on Aug. 14, 2011 after receiving a 911 call from a family member saying that Desai's son, Yashesh, had killed his father.
With the verdict issued Monday, 22-year-old Yashesh Desai will undergo psychiatric treatment at a secure mental health facility.
Defense attorneys said they agreed with the verdict, nothing that psychologists concluded Yashesh Desai suffered from at least two severe psychiatric illnesses that left him unable to understand that his actions were criminal.
Prosecutors say Desai gave a rambling confession following his arrest that included references to Godzilla and claims his father owed him money.
