CHICAGO (AP) -- A witness at a federal court hearing in the murder of a woman whose unborn child was cut from her womb is backing off his claim he sold drugs to a DuPage County prosecutor investigating the grisly 1995 crime.
Dwight Pruitt testified Thursday he made those statements in depositions because he was given cash and a free trip.
Pruitt was testifying during a hearing for convicted killer Fedell Caffey, who is seeking a new trial for his role in the slaying of Debra Evans and two of her children. He received a life sentence. The baby cut from Evans' womb survived.
Accusations that former DuPage County prosecutor Jeffrey Kendall bought drugs from a key trial witness were made in appeals to state courts, which refused to order a retrial.
