(KMOV) – Wednesday marked the beginning of tax season, when most Americans could start submitting their returns to Uncle Sam.

The Internal Revenue Service was supposed to kick off tax season last week, but issues surrounding the avoided fiscal cliff forced the agency to push back the official date to Jan. 30.

Anyone claiming the American Opportunity tax credit or the lifetime learning credit will not have their claims processed until mid-February.

That means roughly 3 million Americans who typically file returns claiming those credits before mid-February will have to wait longer for their tax returns this year.

Visit the IRS websit for more information on filing taxes.
