HOUSTON—A man claimed to have only been playing with his 3-year-old stepson when he fatally struck the little boy in the abdomen, according to Houston police.
Jorge Armando Rodriguez-Escaramuza, 24, was charged with felony murder.
Rodriguez-Escaramuza said he was “play boxing” with the small child on November 2 when he hit the child in the abdomen. The boy’s 20-year-old mother did not seek any medical attention for her child until two days later, according to court documents.
The mother called 911 that day after finding her son nonresponsive. Paramedics arrived and tried to revive the child, but nothing could be done. The little boy died.
Doctors at Texas Children’s Hospital said the boy died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen. He had a perforated intestine that leaked bile into his body. Doctors explained that type of injury typically takes 48 to 72 hours to turn fatal.
Doctors said the blow would have been substantial to cause such an injury and ruled the death a homicide.
The mother admitted to being in the home the day her child was struck. She said she was in another room when she heard her son cry out, but was told the two were just playing.
No bond was issued for Rodriguez-Escaramuza.
