HOUSTON—The mom of the 15-year-old Memorial Middle School student, who was allegedly sexually assaulted as many as four times by his teacher, says the boy and their entire family are devastated and struggling to deal with the repercussions of the sexual encounters.
"People like this should not be walking on the streets. Should not be close to our children," the mother said.
The teacher, 29-year-old Kathryn Camille Murray, was fired shortly after she was charged with one count of sexual assault of a child. A sibling of the 15-year-old victim says he found the boy and the teacher in bed together at the victim’s home. Prosecutors say they have DNA evidence as proof.
Two weeks ago, prosecutors filed additional charges, alleging that prior to that sexual encounter, the teacher and student had intercourse once at a nearby hotel and twice inside Murray’s Memorial Middle School classroom after school hours. Prosecutors say surveillance video at the hotel and in the hallways of the middle school corroborate the boy’s story.
"We are not good. We are very hurt," said the boy’s mom before Thursday’s arraignment, where Murray faced the newest charges against her. "My son is really confused, hurt. We are working with him very closely but he’s not good, not good at all."
"We expect [students] to be in a safe environment, and to certainly not be sexually assaulted by any of the teachers on the campus or the premises of the school. So obviously, it is very concerning to us that this has occurred," Assistant District Attorney Denise Oncken said.
State District Judge Michael McSpadden allowed Murray to remain free on bail, wearing a GPS monitor to make sure she stays away from the boy and his family.
Murray was fired from her job as an English language support teacher in the Spring Branch Independent School District. The victim speaks Spanish.
She was serving as his tutor.
