PHILIPSBURG, Pa. -- A retired state trooper shot and killed his wife inside a central Pennsylvania supermarket Thursday morning before committing suicide, state police said.

Their names were not released by authorities because investigators had not contacted their closest relatives. But a woman who spoke with reporters outside the County Market in Philipsburg said she was the woman’s sister and that the slain woman had a restraining order against her husband.

Someone called 911 to report the shooting around 10 a.m., and police found two people dead when they arrived, Trooper Matthew Reifer said.

Emergency dispatchers said the scene was secure.

No one answered the phone at the store late Thursday morning, and messages were not returned by the Clearfield County coroner and district attorney.

A manager at another store in the same shopping complex said squad cars had filled the parking lot and that her store was on lockdown. Brittany Thompson, a manager at the Peebles, said a police officer had come in to tell staff and shoppers that several people had been shot at the Country Market.

“Some of the customers in here were shook up,” she said.
