WASHINGTON (AP) — The government is issuing a fresh warning about drop-side cribs.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says at least 32 young children have strangled or suffocated in the past nine years due to problems with the cribs. In addition, 14 other deaths in the cribs have been reported over the same time period, though safety officials have not conclusively determined they had to do with the drop-side problems.
The agency says drop-side cribs tend to be less structurally sound than cribs with four fixed-sides. Drop-side cribs have one side that moves up and down to allow parents to lift children from the cribs more easily. But that side can break, deform or detach, creating a dangerous gap between the crib mattress and dropped side.
