BOSTON (AP) — A lawyer for the longtime girlfriend of Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger (BUHL'-jur ) has argued that her 8-year prison sentence for helping him while he was a fugitive was too harsh.

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday in Catherine Greig's (grehgz) appeal. Greig pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive and other charges after she and Bulger were captured in California in 2011. The couple was on the run together for 16 years.

Greig's lawyer says the judge "effectively tripled" the appropriate sentence for Greig. He says Greig should have been sentenced to about 2½ years.

A prosecutor says Greig was sentenced appropriately because she did an array of things to help Bulger, including getting his medications.

Bulger faces trial in June, charged with participating in 19 murders.
