BELLEVILLE, Ill (KMOV) — A woman was killed after a suspect broke into her home in Belleville late Monday.
Police responded to the scene to find a man drenched in blood lying on the street in the 600 block of East McKinley around 11:30 p.m.
The man directed the officers inside the residence, where 23-year-old Lenae Cole was found dead with multiple stab wounds
Police say the male victim told officers that he and the woman were both injured during an alleged home invasion.
Police found a man in the area and took him into custody for further questioning. They later took another man into custody.
Neighbors said they remember Cole as having two young daughters, who police say were in the home at the time.
“She’s got two beautiful little kids,” said Jim Daubach. “She’s got a little girl that is the sweetest little thing. She’s probably got a 2-month-old baby right now.”
The children were unharmed and taken into protective custody.
Police said the male victim was taken to an area hospital, where he remains in unknown condition.
Detectives said they do not believe the attack was random and think the victims were targeted by the suspects
“Don’t want to speculate on motive at this point in the investigation, however we do feel that this was a targeted attack,” said Det. Mark Heffernan with Belleville police.
Police said they are confident the two men in custody are the only other people involved in the crime. They are not looking for anyone else.
The suspects have not been charged, but they are being held at the Belleville Police Department.
