(KMOV) -- Two seventh-grade students in Virginia Beach, Va., were handed long-term suspensions Tuesday that will last until the end of the school year for playing with an airsoft gun while waiting for the school bus.
A school committee voted to suspend Khalid Caraballo and Aidan Clark for an entire year.
Khalid said he and friends were playing with the non-lethal guns on his lawn while they waited for the school bus. He admits to shooting at two other friends, but said he never took the gun off the family's private property.
A neighbor saw one boy shooting the airsoft gun in his yard and called 911, telling the dispatcher, "He is pointing the gun and it looks like there's a target in a tree in his front yard.”
The principal says other kids were on their way to the bus stop when they were hit with the pellets, so the school has jurisdiction.
The boys’ parents don’t agree with the punishment. Khalid and Aiden are suspended until next June for possession, handling and use of a firearm.
A hearing will be held in January to determine if they will be allowed back in school.
Virginia Beach Police say no one will be charged in the case.
