Coal truck overturns -- Interstate 55 and Highway 203
MADISON, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Several people were hospitalized after a chain-reaction accident on Interstate 55/70 involving an overturned semi-trailer truck on Friday night.
Authorities say the semi-truck tried to exit the highway around 7:15 p.m. near the intersection of I-55 and Highway 203 in Madison, Ill.
Officals report the semi-truck tipped over, dumping 40,000 pounds of coal onto lanes of westbound I-55.
Authorities report two cars then collided while trying to avoid the spilled coal. Officials report another set of cars tried to avoid those cars, continuing a chain-reaction crash.
Several people were transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Drivers faced a delay for approximately four hours while crews worked to clear the scene. All lanes of traffic were reopened later on Friday night.
Officials report the semi-truck driver has been charged with failure to reduce speed and losing the load.
