(KMOV.com) – Three St. Charles schools were placed on lockdown Friday afternoon while police responded to an incident in the area.

St. Charles West High School, Jefferson Intermediate and Monroe Elementary were all placed on lockdown sometime around 2:30 after police were advised there could be a domestic disturbance in a home near the schools that could pose a danger to students.

When police arrived at the house, there was no one at the residence. Officers then located the homeowner at his job in Warren County.

He told officers he had no knowledge of the situation, but suspected it was his ex-girlfriend trying to cause trouble.

According to school officials, students had been dismissed from the high school prior to the lockdown, but those involved in after school activities were called back into the building. Students at Jefferson normally are dismissed at 3:05, but were sheltered until the situation was resolved. Monroe didn't dismiss until 3:50, but the building is locked down until police gave the all clear.

The lockdown was lifted and all students were released by 4 p.m..
