(KMOV) – An elementary student was suspended after they were caught with a BB gun in a local classroom. Some parents question the week-long delay from district on informing community.

Administrators of the Ferguson-Florissant School District sent a letter home with Walnut Elementary students a week after a sixth-grade student brought a 9-inch neon green Airsoft BB gun to school.

The student was called to the principal’s office, his backpack was searched and the weapon was found. The principal said the boy was immediately given a ten-day suspension.

Parents were notified a week after the incident took place which has some wondering why there was a delay.

“We just want them to know that that is not our standard procedure. They need to know that our students' safety and their involvement and notifying them is a top priority, and we're very sorry that this occurred,” said Jana Shortt with the Ferguson- Florissant School District.

The spokesperson said standard operating procedure is to communicate incidents like this one on the day it occurred or the next school day. It’s trying to determine whether there may have been a miscommunication. The district said incidents like this one are rare and said it understands. Parents deserve to be in the know.

“The same day it happened. That’s important you know, because a parent be a work, and they don't know what's going on. They think they're in as safe school,” One parent said.

There will be a disciplinary hearing to determine whether further action will be taken.
