(KMOV.com) -- A store clerk admitted to copying customer’s credit card numbers and going on a shopping spree. News 4 talked to the store owner to figure out how this happened.

The Maryland Heights business officials from Smarty Had a Party said the clerk allegedly copied the numbers when customers made orders over the phone.

Smarty Had a Party helps customers plan wedding, birthday parties and other special events.

A store spokesperson said three different customers reported unauthorized purchases with their credit cards.

According to Maryland Heights Police, 26-year-old Andrew McCoy confessed to spending more than $400 on other people’s credit cards.

Smarty Had a Party said they are now keeping a better track on employees once hired, because background checks and screening are not enough.

Dan Simon, with Smarty Had a Party, said it is key for supervisors and managers to follow proper procedures and follow up with employees.

“That means supervisors and managers doing their due diligence,” said Simon.

Smarty Had a Party said the worker was terminated once he confessed to the theft.

Officials said this is the first time something like this has happened at the party supply store and that most customers order over the internet.
