(KMOV.com) -- St. Louis is ranked among the best cities for having a dog, according to NerdWallet.com.

In honor of National Pet Month, the personal finance website analzyed the 95 largest U.S. cities to determine which one's were best for owning a dog.

To establish the ranking, NerdWallet used three critera: the number of off-leash dog parks per 100,000 residents, the cost of a visit to the vet, and how optimal the city is for walking a dog.

St. Louis ranked ninth on the list while Portland, Ore. came in at the top spot for the second year in a row. Long Beach, Calif. came in just below St. Louis at number 10.
