(KMOV) – St. Louis Public Schools is struggling to fill several postings for school nurses within the district.

The district has openings for eight school nurses at this time.

School nurses say it’s rewarding to work with children district are having a hard time attracting nurses because it’s difficult to offer competitive salaries.

They are working with salaries offered by area hospitals which are out of range for most districts.

"You're talking about a ten month salary compared to a 12 month salary, so it is a little more difficult  for a school district to be competitive with an environment, a company that offers a 12 month salary, so certainly they're going to pay a little more," said Patrick Wallace, spokesperson for the St. Louis Public Schools.

Schools are not going without nurses as they continue to use contract nurses on a temporary basis.
