(KMOV) – St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and owner Hospital Sisters Health System on Wednesday announced plans to build a new $300 million hospital in the Metro East.

Hospital officials say the new building will be located near Interstate 64 and Green Mount Rd. in O’Fallon, Ill.

In Nov. 2011, St. Elizabeth’s proposed building a 144-bed hospital at the same location, but no progress ever got made.

Hospital officials said then new hospital will have fewer rooms than St. Elizabeth's in Belleville, but it will focus more on outpatient and emergency care. The Belleville location will be used for radiology and lab work.

"We give great care here, but to be able to do it in a facility that's technologically advanced into the 21st century," said St. Elizabeth's CEO Maryann Reese.

The hospital hopes its location will make it easily accessible for those who currently have to travel to Missouri for care.
