(KMOV.com) – St. Clair County board members are asking voters to approve a sales tax hike to pay for a jail expansion.

In July, News 4 reported on overcrowding at the St. Clair County Jail.

It has room for 418 inmates but averages 462 prisoners a day, causing prisoners to often sleep on the floor.

With the expansion the jail would have 525 beds.

The county has been warned the jail does not comply with state standards.
