(KMOV.com) – A second child on Tuesday died from a weekend drowning incident at a downtown St. Louis hotel pool.
Officials said 9-year-old Derrone Snelson died at the hospital where he had been treated since both boys were rescued from a pool at the Pear Tree Inn on Saturday. His twin brother, Laron Snelson, died Saturday.
Police say a hotel guest had just checked into the Pear Tree Inn in the 2200 block of Market Saturday afternoon when he heard screams for help from the pool area near the hotel lobby. A hotel employee was working on one boy and the guest, Kevin Shelton, 29, of Peoria, Ill., began giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the other.
“Someone asked if anyone knew CPR,” Shelton told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Saturday. He had CPR training in the Army.
“I was just praying and helping,” Shelton said.
Authorities say the boys were in the pool area with relatives, including their mother and 14-year-old brother. Police spokeswoman Schron Jackson declined to discuss specific details about the incident.
“This is an ongoing investigation and we don’t have all the details at this point,” Jackson said.
The department’s child abuse unit is investigating, but police say that is standard in a child death case.
In a statement released early Sunday, Division Director of Drury Hotels David Ziegler said,“We are aware of this tragic situation. We are working with police and medical personnel to find out the specifics of what happened. Our condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of those involved.”
