Update: St. Louis Police told News 4 they arrested Akery Friday night.

(KMOV.com) -- A convicted sex offender is on the run and police think he’s a person of interest in a recent assault downtown.

St. Louis Police said Wednesday, a woman told them she’d been grabbed by a guy in the 200 block of 9th street and knocked to the ground.

Officers say Shawn Akery is now a person of interest in that crime.

Akery is a convicted sex offender who, according to reports, attempted to rape a female store clerk in Franklin County back in 2007. He’s also been convicted on robbery charges.

He was released from prison and allowed to live at the St. Louis Community Release Center.

But police said Wednesday, the same day as the assault, he checked out and never returned.

The facility does allow people to leave for work, but it’s unclear how Akery was able to just walk away.

Police said Akery is 28-years-old, 5’ 9” and 150 pounds. If you’ve seen him, call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
