(KMOV.com) – A middle school student is facing punishment after she used mace on other students at a north St. Louis school Tuesday morning.

Officials with the St. Louis Public Schools told News 4 a student got into an argument with two other students in the cafeteria at Yeatman-Liddel Middle School during breakfast.

Officials said a fight then erupted and the girl sprayed mace on several other students.  Thirty-four students received medical attention, but are expected to be okay. The school district is investigating the incident.

Students are not allowed to bring mace onto school grounds because it is classified as a weapon by the district. The school district told News 4 it has security measures in place to make sure schools are safe.

“Their backpacks and purses and things like that are checked. Obviously, this student was able to get the mace into the school today,” said Patrick Wallace with St. Louis Public Schools.

According to the district’s code of conduct, a student who brings a weapon to school could face suspension for a calendar year or expulsion.
