(KMOV)-- In the last two days, two Ballwin businesses have been targets of a phone scam taking advantage of the cold temperatures to get people’s money.

The scammers called two restaurants, identifying themselves as an Ameren employee and demanding the business owners to get a Green Dot card or money order to pay their bill or the utilities will be shut off.

“This is designed for that purpose in mind that their utilities will be shut off during cold weather. I'm sure that's why the scammers are using that particular dodge this time,” said Sgt. Jim Heldman with the Ballwin Police Department.

The businesses in these two cases did not follow the scammers’ orders and notified police.
