(KMOV) – Several vacant lots in north St Louis have been turned into urban cornfields.

The tall corn plants are filling blocks between St Louis and Cass Avenues near St Louis Place Park.

A local group is leasing the land from a developer to see if it can sustain agriculture.

Some local residents claim the tall corn is offering a cover for criminals.

“It’s my safety, if I’m walking up the street and someone wants to grab my purse.  You can't see them?  I can't see them until I’m on them,” Sarah Davis said.

The group farming the land says the corn will be cleared in a couple of weeks.
