(KMOV.com) -- Complaints are mounting about problems with the upkeep of a north St. Louis County cemetery.

Many former slaves and World War I veterans are buried in Washington Park Cemetery in Berkeley, Missouri, however some gravestones are hidden by the overgrowth of grass and plants.

Carl Dean was searching for relatives’ graves and called the conditions of the cemetery disrespectful.

“It’s unbelievable that it’s been allowed to go in this type of shape for so long,” said Dean, “It’s disgrace, it’s a disgrace.”

A spokesman for the city of Berkeley said four volunteers are helping the cemetery owner, but progress is slow because of limited funds and the overgrowth is so thick.

The city officials also said if progress doesn’t continue, the city will take action against the owner.
