(KMOV.com) -- The American Red Cross is reporting a nationwide blood shortage caused by the winter weather that hit this past week.
Missouri is one of 25 states experiencing the shortage. Officials said over the last week 30 blood drives have been canceled in the St. Louis area because of bad road.
Those blood drive cancellations have resulted in the loss of an estimated 900 units of blood.
“Now we are finding ourselves behind the eight ball a bit, and we’re hoping that donors will come out now that the weather is improving, the road conditions are better,” said Dan Fox with the Red Cross, “We hope they will come out to blood drives and donations centers and we can restock our shelves.”
The American Red Cross said they will be having several drives at their donation centers over the next few weeks.
