(KMOV) – Hundreds of dollars are being used to tear up a well-used ball field for a new dog park and some Sunset Hills residents believe it’s too much to spend on the dogs.

“At night from approximately six to eight, you see children and their families playing ball, playing soccer, flying kites. We would like to see that kind of use continues.”

Nearby resident and Sunset Hills Alderman Tom Musich is speaking out against the proposed dog park.

“The second concern we have is the amount of money. The proposed total cost of this project is around $725,000. This is extremely excessive for a dog park,” Musich said.

Sunset Hills Conservation President Butch Thomas says the funds are from a grant and that park money is to be used for a park.  Thomas supports the change and says there is a need for a dog park.

“We have no places for people to walk their dogs and exercise them. We are having more and more people in condos and we just think it’s a good idea. “

This piece of land is right behind Truman Middle School and on the border of Sunset Hills and Crestwood.

Crestwood residents will be allowed to use the dog park too and Crestwood officials would split the cost of maintenance with Sunset Hills.
