(KMOV) – A proposed new ordinance on rental property in unincorporated St. Louis is raising concern for residents.

Mike O’Mara, a county councilman, proposed a new ordinance that rented homes be registered and owners be held accountable if they do not keep up on maintenance.

It has been rumored that friends and family who visit will need a permit. O’Mara denied those rumors and said they would not need a permit.

Highway and Public Works spokesman David Wrone said the ordinance would require much more work for departments that handle paperwork and inspections on rental property. The staff to handle such work is limited.

O’Mara said that fines from the new ordinance would help to fund additional employees that will be needed.
