ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Police are searching for a man who carjacked a woman before leading police on a chase in St. Louis County Wednesday night.

According to authorities, a woman and her 13-year-old son had just arrived to her home in the 9100 block of Dana in Wilbur Park around 7 p.m. when a man approached her. A friend of the victim's husband described the event in detail Thursday.

"He was hiding behind the bushes and when his wife stepped out of the car his little son, I think he’s in eighth grade, [the suspect] put a gun to her head and then put a gun to [his son's] head and made him get into the car," saod Dino Gledovich. "And then kicked him out of the car and drove off."

The suspect took the woman’s purse before fleeing from the scene in her vehicle, a black Mazda MPV mini-van.

As police were responding to the carjacking call, they spotted the suspect driving near the intersection of Bayless and Interstate 55 and gave chase.

The driver fled north and crashed the vehicle at Carondelet and I-55. He then got out of the vehicle fled on foot.

Police said they found a handgun inside the van.

The victim was not injured.

Police said the suspect has some facial hair and was wearing a dark sweatshirt with a design on the front.
