FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A Florissant man is dead after his home exploded, then collapsed early Sunday morning. Police say a suicide note found inside the man's vehicle suggests the blast was set off intentionally.

The initial explosion happened just before 3 a.m. at 22 Flower Ridge Lane. Fire officials say the blast sent huge flames into the air, and knocked the house about six feet off its foundation.

The building then collapsed, limiting rescue operations to the first responding firefighters. Rescue workers were not able to get inside the house until about 7 a.m. Sunday.

Kirk Sayles, 52, was found dead inside the residence, according to police.

One neighbor told News 4 the explosion shattered windows and melted siding on his home.

Investigators say Sayles had poured gasoline throughout the home before igniting the accelerant. Although Sayles did not have gas service to his home, fire officials said the force of the fuel explosion ruptured a nearby gas line.

Crews remained on the scene for several hours trying to douse the fire, which was fed by the open gas line.

The explosion remains under investigation.
