(KMOV) -- A Lebanon, Ill. man drowned in a park pond while attempting to retrieve a missing fishing pole Wednesday night.
Police and emergency crews recovered the body of a missing fisherman from the Horner Park pond around 7:30 p.m.
The victim's family told News 4 Louis Jones, 44, went under as he was attempting to find a fishing pole he lost in the pond.
The water rescue call came out shortly before 6 p.m. for Jones who was fishing with several other family members when he jumped in.
"The water was really deep out there and he couldn't bring him up so we got on 911 and tried to call but it was too late,"Kevin Lewis said after witnessing the dramatic rescue effort.
Lebanon Police say there's never seen such a drowning at the pond. They warn others to be aware of the 'No Swimming' signs.
