LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- A Louisville man was arrested on Thursday evening after causing an accident while under the influence, according to police.
Demarco Payne, 26, was allegedly driving erratically on Gagel Avenue, nearly hitting another vehicle head on. He eventually side-swiped a car and sent the driver of that vehicle to the hospital, according to police.
Police said Payne’s three young children were in the backseat during the accident that happened after Payne allegedly ingested a mix of painkillers while drinking a beer.
Payne’s wife, Stephanie Payne, said she was waiting for her husband to pick her up from work, but he never arrived.
She said she was stunned when police called to inform her that her husband and children were involved in an accident caused by her husband.
“He’s a great dad,” she said. “”He’s a really good dad and it hurts that he did this and I want him to get help.”
The children involved in the accident, ages 2, 4 and 6, were not hurt, according to police.
Demarco Payne is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
