(KMOV.com) -- A three-year-old boy remains in serious condition after he was hit by an SUV in Bridgeton early Sunday morning.

The child was struck at the intersection of Old Saint Charles Rock Road and Lindbergh just before 5 a.m.

Authorities say the child wandered away from the Northwest Airport Inn, an extended-stay hotel, while his mother was at work and father was asleep. The boy then ran across the road, according to police, and was hit by a Jeep traveling in the southbound lanes.

Kim Sunderman works next door to the hotel, and said she regularly sees accidents at the busy intersection.

"There's always honking going on where you just expect to hear a crash afterwards," said Sunderman.

The boy was transported to Children's Hospital in critical condition. He was later upgraded to serious condition.

Police have not said whether any charged will be filed.
