STE. GENEVIEVE COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Authorities said a construction worker was struck and killed by a truck on Interstate 55 near Ste. Genevieve Monday morning.

Police said a loaded asphalt truck backed over the victim while he was picking up a highway sign in the southbound lanes of I-55 around 10:45 a.m.

Authorities said the pavers had closed the left lane of I-55 Monday morning with orange cones, but left the right lane open. Police said the victim crossed the right lane but did not see the asphalt truck backing up and was struck.

The man, identified as 31-year-old Larry Dye, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim worked for Hannibal-based Chester Bross Construction and had been hired as a contractor by MoDOT. His identity has yet to be released pending notification of his family.

Police shut down southbound lanes of I-55 while crews worked to clear the scene.  Traffic was being diverted at the Highway DD exit, located a few miles north of the accident.
