( -- A police officer is in the hospital after he was ejected from his car after what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop in Brooklyn, Ill. Sunday morning.

Brooklyn officers who were pursuing 25-year-old Melvin Fraction early Sunday escaped life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say an officer was trying to pull over Fraction’s car along Route 3 South near Jefferson when that vehicle sped off.

Police said about four blocks down the road, Fraction’s vehicle crossed over the center line and struck another Brooklyn police car, ejecting the officer from the car.

The officer was transported to the hospital where he is reported to be in serious condition.

At least four of the five occupants in Fraction’s car – including him - were injured.

Fraction was later charged with being a felon in possession of a handgun and with two counts of aggravated fleeing.

Online court records don’t show whether Fraction has an attorney. He does not have a listed home telephone number.
