(KMOV) -- Police have two men in custody following a south St. Louis home invasion that left a mother and her infant fearing for their safety.

A mother and her one-year-old infant ran upstairs as two men kicked in the door of a home on the 4000 block of Lafayette around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The woman dialed 911 as she hid in a bathtub with her baby. According to the police report, officers arrived and were immediately confronted by the suspects.

Police say one of the men tried to stab the responding officers with a screwdriver as another attempted to hit the officer with a board.

Authorities say the officer responded by firing a shot, striking one suspect.

“Here we've got a young mother inside her residence hiding in fear for her safety. These two individuals are fully prepared to stab an officer and assault him, we don't know what would have happened if they'd found her lying in that tub." said Commander Michael Sack of St. Louis Metro Police.

One suspect was tased and arrested as he attempted to flee the scene.

The injured suspect was able to get into a vehicle and drive from the scene. Officers were able to track him down and arrested him moments later. He was taken to the hospital in police custody to receive treatment for the gunshot wound.

The mother and her child were not injured.

Further details into the investigation were not immediately known.
