ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- A section of Interstate 44 in downtown St. Louis that was closed for construction during the weekend reopened ahead of schedule Sunday night.

The Missouri Department of Transportation closed the Eads Bridge and I-44 from Broadway, near the Edward Jones Dome, to the Poplar Street Bridge at 8:00 p.m. Friday and reopened the area around 8:00 p.m. Sunday night.

During the closure, crews placed girders over the interstate as part of the project that will place a park over the roadway. The new park will allow for movement between the Arch grounds and the rest of downtown.

The renovation is part of a $380 million upgrade of the area around the iconic monument.
