Man dead after fire breaks out at apartment complex in Vandalia

(KMOV.com) – A man is dead after multiple departments responded to a fire at an apartment complex early Saturday morning in Vandalia.

The Vandalia Fire Department, Brownstown Fire Department, Vandalia Police and Fayette County Sheriff’s office responded to a call at the Central High Apartments in the 200 block of N. Kennedy at 12:39 a.m.  

As the occupants of the complex were evacuated one male was found dead in the hall area of the first floor.  The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:06 a.m. by the Fayette County Coroner.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the cause of death and positively identify the victim.

The case is currently under investigation by the Fayette County Coroner and Illinois Fire Marshalls office.
