ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – St. Louis University will hold a public memorial service for beloved basketball coach Rick Majerus on Friday.

The service starts at 3:30 p.m. at the Chaifetz Pavilion.

Majerus passed away at a Los Angeles hospital last Saturday from complications of a heart condition. He was 64.

Majerus was undergoing evaluation and treatment in California for the ongoing heart trouble and the school announced he was on leave in late August.

The school announced November 19th that Majerus wouldn’t return to Saint Louis because of the heart condition. He ended the school’s 12-year NCAA tournament drought last season, and bounced back from his only losing season, with a team that won its opening game and took top regional seed Michigan State to the wire. The Billikens were ranked for the first time since 1994-95.

“Rick Majerus impacted so many people within the SLU and St. Louis communities,” SLU Director of Athletics Chris May said. “We look forward to celebrating the life of Coach Majerus with the Saint Louis community. Current and former student-athletes, interim head coach Jim Crews and other members of the SLU family will speak and share their favorite Coach Majerus memories.”

Majerus’ Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Milwaukee at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Church of the Gesu, 1145 West Wisconsin Avenue.
