(KMOV.com) –  The Macoupin County Board is not allowing its own sheriff to hire two more deputies because of finances.

Macoupin County Sheriff Don Albrecht recently announced two more officers were being added the department’s staff, but board thinks the county can’t afford the hires. Both positions pay just under $51,000 per year.

Board members have called a special meeting to discuss the issue because they believe the county is on track to run a deficit between $50,000 and $70,000.
