(KMOV.com) – A St. Louis attorney filed a class action lawsuit against East St. Louis because of the city’s speed cameras.

The city suspended speed cameras last week, and East St. Louis officials said those who received tickets because of the cameras can tear them up.

East St. Louis police had been issuing tickets to motorists with handheld speed cameras, but Illinois State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said violators did not have to pay the fines because they were being collected in a way that violated Illinois law.

The recent lawsuit states that the city does not have the authority to pass an ordinance allowing the cameras. According to the suit, the city also failed to give car owners adequate due process.
