(KMOV.com) – School officials told News 4 a teacher at Potosi High School has been fired after she allegedly had sex with a student.

The teacher, who is accused of having an affair with a 17-year-old male student, was fired Thursday. A letter was sent home to parents informing them of the teacher’s firing Friday, but some parents told News 4 they were upset they were not told about the situation on Thursday.

"It's very important when we send things home that it contains accuracy and when you're in the middle of an investigation sometimes you don’t have all the details," Potosi Superintendent Randy Davis said.

The Washington County Sheriff told News 4 an investigation is being conducted to determine if any charges will be filed. News 4 has learned the teacher will not be charged with having sex with a minor because under Missouri law someone is considered an adult at age 17. However, she could face other charges.

"Several years ago a law was passed involving a teacher and student, no matter what age, becomes a criminal offense," Davis said.
